Light Adjustable Lens™ from RxSight®
For patients who visit us for laser cataract surgery from Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado, including Durango, Farmington, Aztec, and Bayfield, we are excited to offer a new alternative to adjustable lenses used during cataract surgery. The Light Adjustable Lens™ from RxSight® is a revolutionary IOL that can be adjusted after surgery to ensure your vision is as clear as possible.
Unlike traditional IOLs, which require the surgeon to select the prescription before surgery, the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) can be adjusted using specialized UV light treatments to enhance your vision to suit your needs after cataract surgery.
Ideal Candidates for the Light Adjustable Lens
Most cataract surgery patients are good candidates for the Light Adjustable Lens if they meet the following criteria:
- Need surgery for cataracts.
- Have an astigmatism that’s at least 0.75 diopters.
- Do not have preexisting macular disease.
- Do not take medications that increase sensitivity to UV light.
How Is the Lens Adjusted?
The Light Adjustable Lens is made from a special photosensitive material that responds to UV light.
During your cataract surgery, the Light Adjustable Lens is implanted into the eye, replacing the clouded over lens caused by cataracts. The surgical process for using a Light Adjustable Lens is the same as cataract surgery with an IOL or fixed lens.
The difference lies in the post-surgical treatment. After surgery, you will undergo a minimum of 2 light treatments to adjust your lenses to suit your vision needs.
Approximately 2-3 weeks after your laser cataract surgery, you will return to Four Corners Eye Clinic for your first light treatment. You will receive at least 2 light treatments to adjust your vision following surgery. During this 90-second light treatment, your ophthalmologist will use specialized UV light treatments to adjust the shape of the lens, allowing you to compare possible vision outcomes based on your needs and desires. Your second light treatment will be scheduled several days after your first treatment. Once you and your ophthalmologist are satisfied with the prescription, your lens adjustment will be locked in.
What To Expect After Cataract Surgery With Light Adjustable Lenses
In the first weeks after surgery, your doctor will have you wear UV-blocking glasses during all waking hours indoors and outdoors to protect your eyes from exposure to other sources of UV light, which can cause uncontrolled changes to the Light Adjustable Lenses.
After your prescription has been locked in, you can stop wearing the UV-blocking glasses and enjoy your custom vision!
